For the Leadership and Management module of the Degree in Business and Management that I am studying at The University of Derby Online (UDOL) I have been asked to offer my thoughts on GLOBE. You can read more about Project GLOBE here:
From the research that I have conducted on Project GLOBE, I am impressed at the scale and level of detail of the project. My major takings from the project are as follows:
- A network of 170 scientists and management experts conducted the research: I like that this number of researchers will remove much of the potential skew and personal thoughts and opinions that might be present in studies conducted by a solitary or small group of researchers.
- The research was conducted over 61 'societal cultures,' that could be split into 10 'societal cultures.': This shows the vast scale and scope of the research project, that looked for common and cultural management dimensions.
- Data was taken solely from 'middle managers' from the various companies: I think that this could be a potential downfall of the project due to the opinions of employees that have already made the step to a management or leadership position.
- 74.8% of the participants were male: The cause of this may well be availability of the potential participants, especially because of the range of cultures looked at and/or the middle management criterion. This is still a value that, in my opinion, (for one reason or another) should be more representative of the global population.
- In the 2nd phase of the research, the group did not use employees of multi-national companies to collect data. This is because a multi-national can merge or fuse cultures and feelings on what dimension make successful leaders.
