My View on Todays Celebrity Culture

I was thinking earlier on this week about how different things are today than they were in say, the 1980’s or even the 1880’s, (from what I've heard of these eras as I didn't exist in either!). There seems to be a new type of ‘idol’ that has become popular in recent years, the type of idol who actually has no reason to be an idol, the type of idol who doesn't really poses any talent or skill at all, the type of idol that their only real contribution to anything is on their twitter feed - Celebrities. I think that the younger generation (not all of them) of today admire the wrong people, when the right people aren't too far away, and they have probably heard of them, but are unaware of anything these people have done!

What are the reasons for ‘celeb culture?’
·         Because technology has given every one of us the internet and a smartphone, this has caused something called “going viral” a thing.
·         Because it is easier than knowing and understanding what people who make a real contribution do.
·         Materialistic celebrities seem exciting to younger people especially if these people haven’t had every luxury handed to them in life
·         Schools fail to give children idols and role models that are suitable from an early age.
·         Careers advice is NOT good enough (in the UK) from my experience.

I googled ‘talentless celebrities’ and a link to posh24.com’s top 7 talentless celebs stood out to me, I decided to have a look and see firstly how many of these celebs I knew of and secondly if I agreed with all of the people who had made it on to this list.

Here is the list…

The Kardashians
1.      Kevin Federline: It is true what posh24 have said, ‘K-Fed’ is mainly famous for marrying Britney, he has carved out a celebrity status from the shadow of another celebrity. Kevin has been a backup dancer for Michael Jackson and Justin Timberlake.
2.      The Kardashians: Well if you exclude failed attempts to break the internet and a poor reality T.V. show the Kardashian don’t seem to have much to brag about talent wise. The article stated that they didn’t understand why the Kardashians were famous and many people have made this comment whilst taking about the family. After a little bit of internet searching I found that Daddy Kardashian was a friend of O.J Simpson and defended him in his controversial court case for double murder, so that’s one mystery solved anyway.
3.      Katie Price: AKA or better known as Jordan, the page 3 model rocketed to success after a breast enlargement, after reality T.V. got its claws into her with I’m a Celebrity and then Katie and Peter, she has become a household name.
4.      Jesse James: Jesse James was married to Sandra Bullock between 2005-2010, this may have got peoples backs up against the West Coast Choppers CEO. But as an entrepreneur who started a custom motorcycle manufacturer from his mother’s garage in 1992 I fail to see how he is talentless. In my opinion they got this one wrong!
5.      Jersey Shore Cast: Jersey Shore ran for a tedious 6 series, it is hard to believe, I totally agree with this one, the cast have done nothing but been followed around by a camera.
6.      Paris Hilton: Heiress to the Hilton fortune Paris was unfortunate to be the feature of a leaked sex tape that she claimed was filmed in confidence with somebody she loved. Paris is made out to be a complete air head, mainly by her own doing in reality T.V. shows, although there is a business woman tucked away in there somewhere, but as all good business people do, she knows what sells!
7.      David Hasselhoff: What!? Do the people at posh24.com not know that The Hoff took down the Berlin Wall? David Hasselhoff’s career makes for impressive reading, the star of knight rider - after the car obviously, and Baywatch, added with his music and film career the Hoff is far from talentless!

Josie Cunningham
In the U.K we have a new strand of talentless celeb, the kind that gets boob jobs on the NHS, the kind that tries to sell tickets to her child birth, the kind that offers to ‘get rid’ of her unborn child in order to go on reality T.V. and the kind that offered to disappear as long as she got to sleep with Keith Lemon. Yes, I am talking Josie Cunningham. Literally the most talentless celeb that has ever walked this earth.

But why are people fixated on the lives of these people and not real contributors?

In the past, people with real talent and skill were praised and held highly in the hearts of the population. I am talking about the likes of Charles Darwin, Isombard Kingdom Brunel, Matthew Boulton and James Watt, Albert Einstein and Marie Curie. These are the types of people we want our children to admire, and who they should aspire to be like.

My Top 8 Celebs that deserve gratification:
  1. Prof Stephen Hawking
  2. Richard Branson
  3. Gordon Ramsay
  4. Steven Fry
  5. Bill Gates
  6. David Beckham
  7. Alan Sugar
  8. One of the great minds of our
    time Dr. Stephen Hawking
  9. Prof Brian Cox

I will explain why these 8 celebrities in particular ion another post to come soon.

Seriously research some of these people as some of the things they have done for humanity, their field or just businesses they have ran are truly remarkable.

In my opinion, people who change our lives and knowledge of the world everyday such as engineers, doctors, roboticists, physicists and inventors should be held in higher regards than the before mentioned people who constantly clutter our newspapers.
